"Zoo"k-Out!
It has been prehistoric ages ago as I recount the last time I visited the Singapore Zoological Gardens (or now simply called, the Singapore Zoo). From then a Primary Two school kid until now, the years has come up to nearly a decade and a half.
Oh my. To me, a decade just seems like a century because it is so LONG! It got me thinking what I've been doing for the past ten years and suddenly I feel I'm getting old. (I always think I'm forever 18 that's why.. lolx..)
So today, after a departure of 15 years, I'm making a revisit and a nostalgic walk-down to this attraction widely known for its "open zoo" concept, animal shows, primate kingdom, and animal stars like Ah Meng and Inuka.
Not sure if me and my buddies have chosen a wrong day to come to the Zoo, there are two reasons why I'm saying this - Firstly, the animals today seem a little bit slow, bored and tiresome in their movement. A few that we saw are either sleeping or slacking in one corner of their caves, such that it makes it difficult to capture them on camera.
Well maybe because it's a Sunday. So like us humans, it's also a Lazy Sunday to them as they prefer to laze around and not do anything. While I do hoped the animals could be a bit more active, but I also don't want it to reach to an extent that it puts me at a risk of getting bitten on the chest by some beasts or something. If you know what I mean...
Secondly, the sudden downpour that came in the evening had to dampen our excursion mood and got us trapped in some shelter. Because of that, our plan to explore the whole Zoo before it closes have to be put on a halt.
Despite that, there was still much fun experienced in our encounters with the wild. Such as, coming across a "hao-lian" (Hokkien for arrogant) White Tiger who show off its 'cat-walking' skills in front of us; Seeing a pity little Kangaroo who got OUTcasted by other Kangaroos in the Australian OUTback corner.
The final chance to see Inuka the Polar Bear and his mother, Sheba, enjoying some water fun before one dies and the other gets send away; Learning a surprising fact that animals, some not all, are caged back in don't-know-where and not left in their enclosures when the Zoo reaches closing time. (I always thought the enclosures are where the animals sleep for the night.)
And of course! How could we missed out on the animal show, where it has the clever and cheeky sea lion performing for us? But it seems like they have taken out the elephants' performance segment though. Guess maybe because the newly-renovated amphitheatre is too small to hold them.
All in all, the whole trip was wonderful as we see for ourselves how much the Zoo has evolved over the years, and it wasn't entirely about fun but we do learn some educational facts along the way as well.
And so we say our next visit to the Zoo would be another one and a half decade from now.
