starting from Scratch
Turntables, cross faders, beatmatch, mixing, scratching, cueing - these are the terms you'd come across if you're learning the art of club deejaying. That's exactly what I did last night and eventually for the subsequent three Wednesday evenings.
For a long time, I've always been keeping on a lookout for such courses meant for club DJ-wannabes, either in the newspapers or on the internet. Though I did found a few, they were relatively expensive to me at around $500 plus. That's until one day when I was reading through the SAFRA newsletter, I happened to find out that SAFRA Mount Faber is actually going to conduct a basic DJ course on the 25th of October.
After calling up for more details, I checked that their fees were way more cheaper. With a SAFRA card, I only have to fork out $189 for it. Plus being relatively close to my school (still within the vicinity of the west area), it's quite convenient for me to get there, unless I have no classes on that day. With the chance to do something which I've always wanted to do, I have no qualms about signing up for the course.
More about what goes on during the first lesson of DJing, basically there are 5 of us students in the class. 4 young lads and a middle-aged woman. I know what you are thinking. The fact is, this lady has been misled into joining this course because she thought they will her teach how to use a mixer. Her version of mixers are those big bulky rectangle ones that are usually used in schools (people in IT media club will know what I'm talking about), and very different from those mixers used for DJing. So apparently the course don't covers the use of those bulky types.
Nevertheless, she still show sportsmanship by participating with the class in learning how to read the first beat of a music, cueing it and she enjoyed it. I'm fantasizing of her becoming Singapore's Next Top OL (office lady)-DJ. That would be incredible.
