Lately found myself listening alot to Ryuichi Sakamoto's Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence because it is really a great piece of music.

Beautiful, melancholic and filled with complete sadness.

If you don't know, the music is the theme to the movie of the same name in 1983. A romance war-film set in World War II starring David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto himself, which touches a little on homo-eroticism with regards to the peculiar relationship between Bowie, a prisoner of war and Ryuichi, a Japanese officer.

The theme song really relates well to this relationship of theirs.

Mafia

This week I caught two mafia-related movies in the theatre.

First was Ah-Long Pte Ltd on Wednesday after such A-Long time.

Yes it did took me so long now that Chinese New Year is over and newer flicks are taking over. But while I have already caught Ah Long in action, they still have not caught that Mas Selamat guy who have escaped for more than a week. It really makes me wonder where he could have went.

Back to Ah Long the movie. Amidst those bad reviews and controversies about who-copy-whose-movie, the show was not too bad to watch actually. It was still entertaining with the usual jokes provided although I still can't stand Mark Lee's Malaysian accent-acting and that director Jack Neo seemed to have shifted his focus to the Malaysia audiences.

And just a few days earlier before Ah Long Pte Ltd was Bangkok Love Story, which should be more of Bangkok Mafia Story instead. Basically it's a Thai homoerotic film about a gunman and a rich man and their love story. Oh needn't to explain any further there.

It's something akin to Brokeback Mountain but is more draggy and choppy in here. And the reason I'm saying it's Bangkok Mafia Story because there seemed to be more gangster-violence elements than actual love ones in it. Every second it's either I see people getting shot, getting into fights, being beaten up or something tragic will happen. Or maybe that's just what I saw when I get up from my occasional winks in my seat.

And I'm amazed by how the two characters can openly make out on a roof and on the street without anyone taking shots of them or someone shouting at them, "Oi! Thiam lah!"

The letter "L" is practically everywhere these days. Let me tell you why and what is it about.

(1) "L" is for Leap year,

the once-in-every-four-years event, which takes place today on 29 February.

Happy Birthday to those born this day. To make it even special, the birthday fellow should get itself a Youth Olympic Ring-design cake for the occasion. Afterall, it's a hard wait.

(2) "L" is also for Leaping of,

the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist, Mas Selamat bin Kastari from the Whitley Road Detention Centre. By the way, I heard he walks with a limp. Well if that is so, should not be too hard to capture him yeah?

(3) "L" is for Lydia Sum,

who had passed away last week and buried in Vancouver on Wednesday. Farewell to the Hong Kong comedienne who have brought us numerous laughter with her laughter.

(4) "L" is for L,

the eccentric, slouching pale fellow in the latest manga-adapted movie, L: Change The World. Finally he has a movie of his own after sending off his other partner by putting his name on the Death Note.

I don't know why he's called L, but I believed it has something to do with his "Lan lan suck thumb" habit. He suck his thumb or fingers whenever he met up with situations he can't fix.

(5) And finally, L is for Lee Hsien Loong,

our Prime Minister who recently, admist the Budget Debate, have people around speculating about his health condition. Well the fact is, our PM is fine.

Oh lucki-Lee.

Three's a crowd and that was the case today as I got together with two friends to catch three crazily-funny ladies in Dim Sum Dollies: The History of Singapore.

In a return for a second run of the hit comedy-musical, the Dollies this time re-invent our Singapore's history (everything from Sang Nila Utama to Samsui Women, and Japanese soldiers to Singapore Girl) by giving it a spicy twist, filled with catchy songs, fancy costumes and huge dose of wicked humour.

Blended well into the history-telling, the musical also parodies and pokes fun at controversial current affairs like road blocks, Youth Olympics, Integrated Resorts, en-blocs and so on.

While the Dollies are the main crowd-stealers of the whole show, there's also Hossan Leong who played a supporting cast as "Chopstick" providing equal laughs from his cross-dressing antics as well.

All I have to say is, there's definitely no way you can escape from LOL (laughing out loud) while watching this whole musical. Oh, and I'm totally blast off by the accents the casts created. Especially that of Pam Oei's Makcik character. At least don't sound as irritating as Mark Lee's one in Ah Long Pte Ltd.

Nearing the end of it, I thought National Day was here early. That's because we were led by the entire cast, as part of the closing, into a sing-a-long of some patriotic songs we'd only sing on 9 August and together with mini Singapore flags given to wave to. Weird and slightly embarrassing indeed.

Having never watch a live musical before (film musicals not counted) and a rare opportunity of stepping into one of the grand theatres of the Esplanade, I'm glad that I made the right decision of catching the Dim Sum Dollies.

Kow Long Chou

This Chinese New Year, apart from the usual group of relatives' and friends' houses that I have to go visiting to, there were three other persons I've planned to visit - Ah Kow, Ah Long and Ah Chou.

However, with Chinese New Year already coming to a close, I've only had the time to meet up with Ah Kow but not quite the other two.

Now before I go on any further, let me explained that Ah Kow, Ah Long and Ah Chou, these three fellows were not any distant relatives of mine. And they were not some ah beng friends I have befriended. Neither were they some Chinese deities like "Fu Lu Shou", although in this case it would be "Kow Long Chou."

They were actually the three main leads from three flicks that's showing in our theatres this Chinese New Year period.

Ah Kow, as you'd know, is the adorable alien dog in Stephen Ah Chow's latest comedy CJ7; While Ah Long is the female loan shark played by Fann Wong in Jack Ah Neo's Ah Long Pte Ltd. And of course, Ah Chou is Jay Chou who kungfu-hustles basketball in Kungfu Dunk.

Though it was a pity that I did not managed to catch Ah Long and Ah Chou the two shows, then someone had came up to me consoling and saying, it would be even more pitiful to watch them.

Their reviews was so bad that I actually heard some of them saying, Ah Long Pte Ltd should have pig-head hanged, red paint splashed, and owe $9.50 pay $9.50. While Kungfu Dunk should be dunked into the trash bin in an early spring cleaning for next year's Chinese New Year.

How really bad the two shows is, I don't really know. And I also couldn't care much about it because I'll still stick to liking CJ7. It's delightful to watch, it's Stephen Chow with his wacky antics, and the dog is cute. But out of all these, there's only one main reason - because they used my favourite 70s disco song, Boney M's Sunny in the movie.

Serial Clubber

While movies have their trilogy of sequels, I have my own trilogy of... parties.

Well you see, I attended three major parties, organised by Fabulous Sundays, over this Chinese New Year period. In fact they had four theme parties but I had give one of them a miss, out of exhaustion of energy and money.

On the first day of Chinese New Year, already I was at St James Powerhouse merrying away with a portion of the angbao money I had collected during visiting in the day.

3 days later, I was at St James again. However, this time round instead of Powerhouse, I was at a new outlet called Boiler Room. The special bit about this party is, apart from being held in a new location, it's a 3D party where clubbers are handed 3D glasses to view special 3D visuals that are on display as they dance to the music. I haven't got to mention, that the Boiler Room outlet also has a special dancefloor that rotates.

Now I thought an idea like this is brilliant because not only you get to spin like those candies in the Chinese New Year candy tray at home, allowing you to have a 360 degrees view of the whole clubbing room, it's also a good way of dodging from people you do not wish to see in the club. Now you see me, now you don't.

However, it can be bad if you were to go away for a while and have a hard time later searching or getting back to your friends again on the dancefloor as they seems to be playing merry-go-round with you.

And apparently, some people who were there at the Boiler Room that night were boiling with anger, as they complained about the choice of music played, which is boring to them. Now you'd know clubbers are a bunch of hard-to-satisfy people.

Despite so, there were still others who were boiling with excitement over the 3D visual displays, the rotating dancefloor, as well as stars-spotting (Fiona Xie and Thomas Ong was there).

And there finally came the finale of my party trilogy, which just took place last Saturday - the Chingay post party, City Jam 2008.

A hard-to-come-by opportunity of dancing on the streets without any vehicles and traffic police coming your way. Feels unique and fresh indeed with such an open-spaced thing. Themed the Mardi Gras of the East, perhaps what's missing here is some 881 dancers at the scene with feathers and glitters.

"1, 2... 3, 4, 5..."

Yup just exactly the five of us (four ladies and a ladies' man to be more precise) last night over at Zouk's most famous Mambo Jambo night, which spins retro dance hits every Wednesday.

You would have heard me mentioning before about never stepping foot at Zouk before although it's like a must-visit place for local nightlife, just like Disneyland is to L.A. and Effiel Tower is to Paris. And so I waited for a very long time and finally a chance yesterday with this trip, which officially made me a Zouk-virgin no more.

Well it sure was an eye-opener for me. The place, the crowd, the music, and finally seen for myself those well-known song-synchronized "para-para" moves and the people doing it. I was more amused than hyper throughout the clubbing.

Music with the likes of Bananarama, Rick Astley, Belinda Carlise, and Al Corley were a staple at this themed-night. But there was a certain point in midway where they start playing some rather unexpected and overly-retro slow songs like "Fly Me To The Moon" and "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" that got me puzzled. And better still, a Chinese New Year song was also on the playlist. Like what?

Then again, I was happy because I got to hear my favourite band's song being played. =D

"Mamma mia, here I go again/My, my, how can I resist you..."

Here I am, at the 11th floor of the National Library with the laptop in front and city skyline by the side, finally with the time to do some proper blogging.

Life's been a mess lately. Well not exactly there was lousy times occurring in my personal life, but because of recent room spring-cleaning, painting, and shifting of furnitures with things lying all around that made the house looked like in a terrible mess.

Thankfully now is so much better after the room painting done. Wow, now my room is in a hawt pink! =D

Happy Birthday (I know you're sick of hearing this) to Kalyn girl once again, who had her 21st birthday bash last Saturday at Downtown East chalet. Must kudos to her for being the number one person with the most pictures taken on a birthday. Haha. So much so that I don't know how to send her those pictures as well. "So sorry will delay a bit hor?" =p

Hope you have enjoyed yourself and like the little pressie I gave. "Nice hor? Nice hor?" And of course, thanks to you trio who came up with another belated-birthday surprise for me as well. It's odd!

After that day, I had a sudden intention of booking a chalet to stay as well. It's been a long time since I stay in a chalet "properly."

"Properly" means a bed to myself, not overcrowded with people, and have the time to go relax at the pool, or beach, or enjoy whatever activities they have there. With no money to go overseas, that's the best vacation I can have.

An "Odd" Birthday

It's an odd birthday I had this year.

It's odd for a few reasons. One, that I turned 23, which is an odd number. Somehow I felt odd as well about celebrating a 23rd because it wasn't like a very significant number for age.

And then for this year, I thought I had some of the odd-est and never had before venues for birthday celebration.

On Friday a part of the Anal Code 0612A gang kept me in the dark and sprang up with a birthday cake while I was enjoying my bak ku teh at a coffeeshop opposite Central, Clarke Quay. Man, so unexpected that I nearly choked on the bak ku teh and took me a while to recover from shock for the night.

It ain't just that, I even got to have the staff from the bak ku teh stall to specially light up the cake candles with their ultra long gun lighter, and sang birthday song together for me. Guessed we created quite a din there that a couple sitting at a table next to us was overheard saying, "First time see people celebrating birthday at such a place."

All was not over after the mini bak ku teh party. We hopped over to Singapore River where we had an odd way of squatting down to cut and eat cake by the river side. May sounds unglam but sure is romantic in its own way, with the company of the stars above, river with a view, flashing city lights and occasional screams from the opposite bungee jump.

The following Saturday night after ending work, I got to receive another cake surprise coming from buddy Jim and Kevin. Yet again, the venue was odd with us cutting and eating cake in the middle of a public stairway at AMK Hub.

Finally came Sunday. Spent the upper half of the day at Vivo City, watched One Missed Call, dinner at Dian Xiao Er, followed by NUM fashion show at Powerhouse in the night. Nothing odd for the day unless you count watching a horror show on a birthday occasion to be one. =p

Wow, a new year has arrived and it feels like a fresh start with lots of anticipation.

Let's see what's there for me to look forward to in 2008...

Up and about in this month will be yours truly birthday (haha haiz another year older liao *sobs*), then followed by sunny girl Kalyn with her BIG 21st birthday bash. Then comes the holiday with lots of angbaos and bak-kwa.

And other highlights like F1 race, Singapore Flyer, Beijing Olympics, Mamma Mia! the movie (must-watch movie in 2008 for me!), and so on...

And so I guess for now all that partying is almost done (or not quite?). Well whatever it is, the past week sure was pretty physically, mentally and cash-draining doing all those celebrating, and topping it off with some other miscellaneous stuff like shopping, food-gorging, and an IPPT test.

Woo... now it's the time for me to get some rest before I need to get my body moving again, not shaking in clubs but to do spring cleaning and painting in my room. =p

Rihanna made us chant (ella, ella, eh, eh, eh) to her "Umbrella" song; British invasion hit us with Mika and Amy Winehouse; and comeback careers for Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, the Spice Girls and Take That.

Celebrities in trouble: Christopher Lee was jailed. Benedict Goh was jailed. Paris Hilton was jailed, released and jailed. And Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse and Lindsay Lohan were in and out of rehab for god knows how many times.

Movie screens were hit with glam, glitter, feathers, camp, and kitsch (881, Hairspray, Dream Girls, Poltergay); Childhood cartoons were brought up to the screen (The Simpsons, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chipmunks); Sequels never end (Spiderman, Pirates of the Carribean, Harry Potter, Fantastic 4, Shrek 3, Saw 4); and 'sex appeal' continues to sell (300, Lust, Caution).

China imports were banned; from toys to luncheon meat.

Back in our sunny island we were struck with tragic news like the passing of the five national dragonboaters, cases of Salmonella food poisoning, and rising cost of living (GST, ERP, taxi, food); Nevertheless, there's still the welcoming of good news like the smoking ban in nightspots, the arrival of the A380 Airbus, and the opening of Terminal 3.

Other talks of the town: Repeal 377A, bullied trishaw rider, enbloc projects, full-time national serviceman caught in Orchard Cineleisure after smuggling rifle out of camp.

Oops!... I did it again.

Had one, two many drinks while celebrating Christmas with my friends last night at Tantric Bar that got me vomiting all my "tze char" dinner, Bengawan Solo coffee cake, and Maxwell pork porridge out.

The fortunate thing is, this time is not as "jiak-lat" as the previous first time when I got drunk, and which my head felt like having been ran over by a truck the morning after. No terrible hangover thanks to my friend's advice of taking a pill of Panadol before sleep. It works. (:

And so this is Christmas and what have I done?

Well, I was Santa's envoy for a day. Getting down to the class on Saturday with a bag of candies-filled Christmas stockings and distributing them to the merrying Christmas people, who were also merrying about the last day of their module.

It's nice to see them all so happy with wide smiles on their faces. (:

And what else is there for a Serial Clubber like me to do than to turn up for a Christmas party at St James Powerhouse the following day. =p

What a week of celebrations. Four birthdays, a wedding, and an anniversary party.

It's getting a lot windy these few days.

And I like the weather this way. Not too wet, not too hot. Just cool enough.

Not too sure if you ever felt the same way as me, that there's always this certain smell that came along with the December wind.

A kind that gives you a fuzzy-wuzzy feeling, which seems to tell you that the festive season is here and a new year is coming.

I love December wind.

At least it calms me down and blow away whatever worries I had.

I took the girls to eat at tuckshop yesterday.

Tuckshop? Sounds familiar and ancient?

Yeah, that's the old-school name for the area where primary school kids of the 90s consume their food. Nowadays, we always just refer to as canteen this, canteen that.

Anyway, I didn't really took the girls to a school's tuckshop to eat. "Tuckshop" is in fact the name of a small, cosy cafe located at Tanjong Pagar, just beside Play club.

So there we were again, exploring another new makan place, but that's not it. The main purpose of the trip there is to do a mini birthday celebration for my fellow 13 Clan member, Shan.

If you like to know, Tuckshop is actually quite a nice place with not-too-bad food at affordable prices, and with live music for accompany, which takes place on certain nights. They have two opening hours; one's in the day (from 11.30am to 2.30pm) and the other in the evening (from 5.30pm till late). So if you are hungry from clubbing next door, you can always just pop over.

And so far, of all places that I've tried, I think their fish & chips tastes the best.

Basically I was at Tanjong Pagar for the whole of yesterday. That's because after Shan's celebration in the day, I had to attend another friend's birthday function in the night, happening within the same area just one road across Tuckshop. This time round for steamboat dinner. Argh full!

A man was at a beach trying to pick up some chicks. However, after walking up and down the beach so many times, there is still no girls taking notice of him.

Feeling a little upset, he decided to approach the lifeguard for some advice.

I haven't got to mention, that I finally stepped foot on Dempsey Road two Sunday nights ago.

Formerly Tanglin Camp, where many army recruits of the 60s and 70s would report there for the first day of enlistment and before three-tonners ferried them to their respective army units, the area was refurbished a few years back, and was converted into a cluster of bars, cafes and restaurants, forming Dempsey Village.

Ever since then, Dempsey Road got widely known, and it became the next favourite haunt for locals to enjoy some fine dining, drinking and chilling out with a little Bohemian feel. Holland Village? Eeel so passé.

Probably the least favourite bit about Dempsey Road is its accessibility. Unless you have a walking bus guide as a friend who know his bus route network well in getting there (ahem, like me for instance), otherwise the place is best reach by a car or cab.

Dempsey Village is so ulu that it could well be Singapore's version of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village.

Of course there weren't any strange-looking creatures there when I visited the place with my classy mates. The only ones were probably us, suaku and dessert-craving creatures in the eyes of others. Without saying, the main purpose of our trip there is to visit everybody's favourite ice cream parlour, Ben & Jerry's.

Far different from its other outlets, Dempsey's B&J's is more homely, more cosy, and less noisy without loud live performances. Outside it even has a 70s hippie little magic school bus for you to ride in situ.

Following B&J's, we adjourned to the opposite Harry's Bar, where some sort of a little Mambo Jambo night was going on in there. Needless to say, more food to satisfy our big appetite. With that we finally called it a day, and each returned to our own homes only to continue getting "together in electric dreams..."

I think I must have been very seow on (enthusiastic meaning) today.

I have tasked myself to take a walk starting from Rifle Range Road at Bukit Timah, all the way to Singapore Island Country Club, Thomson Road, and along the way passing by Rifle Range Camp, the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, and MacRitchie Reservoir.

Well not too sure about how much in total this distance is that I've covered, but I sure could feel a burning sensation on my legs after having reached destination. :p

It was a pretty enjoyable hike I have to say, taking the time to explore and discover new things, and the downpour earlier on had also made it cool to walk. But it can be a little scary as well. Imagine being the lone person luking in the deep forest of Central Singapore. And the muddy ground had became slippery to walk due to the earlier rain.

Interesting find along the way: a dead monitor lizard lying by the roadside, whose cause of death I suspect is either hit and run or dehydration (more likely to be this because it's tongue was sticking out and there's a empty drink packet by its side, which could means poor Mr Lizzy have finished his waterpack before he could walked any further).

What's more, you get to have a closer contact with them on the crowded train. So close that you could smell the curry they had, the brand of hair oil they use, and the sour-smelling perfume on them. They are also very willingly to conduct free language lessons for you, and let you pick up one or two of their unique accents from their loud clattering in the train.

Retro Day

I think my blog is getting "older" these days. Digging out those treasures of sepia-coloured pictures from the past and put it up - which I think my mum will probably kill me for exposing her in those uber-retro tu-tu outfit - and even uploaded some Chinese old tunes, must be real mawkish to many my blog is.

Anyway, yesterday I was out with The Couple to catch Hairspray, which I think was an enjoyable musical film to watch. So much so that it makes dear girl Kalyn wanted to get a beehive hair for herself.

Who would knew James Marsden could portray so well as a bubbly show host, far contrast from his down serious "Cyclops" role in X-Men? Plus, I have to say HSM's Zac Efron really has a pair of beautiful, electrifying eyes! *faints* haha.

Just like they had a Negro Day in the movie where every week a day will be reserved for the Blacks to strut their dance stuff on television, yesterday was a Retro Day for me.

Aside from catching the movie which is full of 60s-flavour, singing, dancing, and hairspray(!), we went to have a hearty meal of roti-pratas at The Prata Place, which is located at Upper Thomson Road and where I'd always hangout during my JC days; and that's before I brought The Couple to a place where probably not many people would have visited - Upper Seletar Reservoir.

There are a few reasons why I wanted to visit that place. Firstly, I haven't been there for years. Secondly, I wanted to watch the setting of the sun from the viewing tower there. Thirdly, I wanted to reminisce the days when my dad and mum would come here for their dates.

About Seletar Reservoir, it's actually quite an old-school place that has been around since the 70s, and its most distinct feature is the space shuttle-shaped viewing tower there. I love the tranquility and peaceful environment of the reservoir. It's away from the noisy urban areas, very open-spaced that you could see the wide blue sky, and as I mentioned earlier, a perfect spot to catch the beautiful sun-setting scene.

Definitely a must-visit place for all lovebirds. =)

The Chinese has a belief that during the seventh lunar month, the gates of hell are thrown open, and spirits of the dead are released to roam the earth. To seek protection and ensure one's safety when travelling outside during this month, food, prayers and hell money are offered to these hungry ghosts or "good brothers" to appease them.

Personally, I've not come across anything supernatural before (neither do I want), but as far as I know, there could be two possible ways a person would experience spooky incidents. One, the person has a "third eye". Two, when he/she is down on luck.

I have a friend who told me he could see "things", but will only experience it when his luck is bad. Once at night he was at an ATM withdrawing money when suddenly he saw a pair of hands reaching out from behind, almost seem like trying to grab the money. But when he turned around, there was no one behind.

At my previous job at Robinsons store, I also got to know a guy there who has a "third eye". He stays in Ang Mo Kio and told me about some haunted places in the area. "There's this park facing the MRT station which is very eerie at night," he said. "If you sit at one of the benches there and wait for a while, you'll start to experience a humming sound in your ear like someone whispering to you."

He also told me about Bishan Park in which one time he was there with a group of friends and suddenly blurted out, "Wah... So many..." Immediately he asked his friends to go somewhere else.

It kind of explains why for we know Bishan used to be a cemetery before it was cleared for housing development in the late 70s. With regards to Bishan's spooky past, here's another story I heard of.

Near Raffles Junior College, there is this slip road from Marymount Road turning into Braddell Road. One of my dad's friends say, many drivers who drive through this road late in the night reportedly seeing a white figure standing by the road side. My dad's friend has personally saw it for himself. Under such circumstances, it is said motorists should continue driving and not turn back to look for they might face serious consequences. (For your info, the road is also very near Peck San Theng Columbarium, to where remains from the old Bishan cemetery are exhumed and placed.)

Regardless if you are any of those superstitious kind, I truly believed, if you don't do anything bad, there's no need to be afraid of encountering anything ghostly. Just like the Chinese saying goes,

" 平日不做愧心事，夜半敲门也不惊"

(Translate: if you don't do bad things in the day, there's no need to be afraid of any unexpected door knocks in the middle of the night).

"Campy" is the word to describe the movies released in cinemas this month.

First there's 881, a local production about getai and the story about two childhood friends who strive to become successful getai singers. Like a Grease-esque film, except that it is in Hokkien, and with a lot of glitter, neon lights and feathers.

Three things in the show that captivates me: (1) The pretty catchy Hokkien songs used in it, which goes around in your head after watching. (2) The story plot, although I deemed the input of magical powers a bit ridiculous. (3) Actress Liu Ling Ling for her funny antics as a loud-mouthed nanny to the two close girl-friends.

Showing in the same month is another similar musical-themed film, Hairspray. A remade of the original, it's about a high school girl trying to attain success on a local Baltimore dance show, but faces obstacles because of her body size, racial discrimination, and a pair of evil mother-and-daughter stoppers.

While the focus is on a high school girl, this show is more like a high school gathering for some of the casts. Starring two of Grease alumni - John Travolta (original Grease star) who was transformed into a funny-looking fat mama in it; and Michelle Pfieffer (Grease 2), who has resurfaced into the scene and looking prettier these days.

And then there's High School Musical heart throb, Zac Efron, together with other familiar faces like X-men's "Cyclops" James Marsden and Queen Latifah. I'm definitely going to watch this because it is so retro, so bubblegum that I feel like eating it up.

Finally we had Poltergay, a lesser known French comedy movie about five gay disco-lover ghosts who are still stuck in the 70s and disturbs the life of a couple living in a what-used-to-be-a-discotheque-formerly house.

Glam, disco, glitter, music, retro, bubblegum, campy, kitsch, cheesy - these movies are tasteful to me!

Too coop up with work this year that I had no time to wax lyrical about my patrotism for the country. (refer: last year August posts). Neither have I got to watch the NDP yet. (still do not know what kind of programme they have for this year). Oh well never mind.

Wishing a Happy Birthday too to all my friends belonging to the August babies. Boss Jing, Tiong Lee, Daniel, Mandy, Isaac, James... In fact, the months starting from August onwards are the hot season for birthdays. I guess it has something to do with the change in climate becoming cold, and then the season of love starts getting in. =p

Anyway it's exam again tomorrow. Shan't go too much into it for it's just this same old feeling of anxiety and vexation the day before, and then everything goes back to normal again once it's over. Urgh can get quite sick of it.

I thought it's going to be one hard-to-understand show, but turns out The Simpsons Movie is really wickedly funny.

It's controversial, it takes on movie spoofs (Titanic, Snow White), it pokes fun and ride on the recent Live Earth wave, and I guess that's why it's hilarious. While watching it just reminds me of my Advanced News Gathering and Writing module - Springfield City.

A must-see movie for anyone looking for a good laugh.

Lately I think I've been consuming too much junk food. Let's see...

On last Friday I was out with the BFFs for dinner at Tong Shui Cafe, Thomson Road. Yeah, after seeing the yummy-looking durian toast featured in Jo's blog, I have been dying to try it out for myself.

Frankly speaking, the food at Tong Shui doesn't taste quite good and kind of costly as well. The durian toast that I tried was also a bit disappointing (sorry Jo). The durian paste was a little too sweet for me. But I have to say I like the eating ambience there.

After a rather unfulfilling meal at Tong Shui, we headed right away to the opposite for some roti pratas, said to be the best and most crispy in Singapore according to The New Paper. But then we find the roti pratas not up to expectation also. Well, because they were so over-fried that it becomes more tough than crispy to eat.

Okay me and the BFFs were very particular about having good food, so in a night we have condemned these two places.

On Sunday then, I treated my two lappie-saviours to brownie with ice cream at Ben & Jerry's, VivoCity. So sweet right? I mean, not me, but the brownie. Ha!

And today, the eating continues with me and The "love-shopping-at-Bugis" Sisters down at this little cafe called Pitch Black at Haji Lane. Leaving up to its name because we were in a rather dim room enjoying some nice tea-time treats like salmon sandwich, apple pie, and cheese brownie (recommended). Pitch Black is really a cool place to chill out and they even have movies showing at specific timings.

After Pitch Black, we made our way to the nearby Golden Mile Food Centre a.k.a. The Army Market and eat again! This time we had waffles with chocolate dip from this famous advertised stall called The Sweet Stone Parad' Ice, which also serves gelato, fondue, and all that sinful chocolate stuff.

All these junk food is so sinful but it's good =p

Officially welcome Kalyn on her first day of work at "WhatHeWants" - a shop at The Cathay which sells "what-men-want" male grooming products - and has become my new neighbour two shops away as well.

So the next time you patronized the shop and if you're a guy somemore, expect her saying impatiently:

Anyway, just sharing with you something I've noted, about this little area inside The Cathay I called it - "The Rainbow Stretch."

Basically it's a stretch of shops which are deemed gay-friendly and earning the Pink dollar with the things they sell.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) celebrates 40 years of National Service this year.

Being part of the community who have to fire a gun, sleep with other men in a bunk, and bashing through jungles with them upon the age of 18 and over, I shall do a little tribute here by sharing with you about my life during the NS years.

The journey starts in April 2, 2004, the day of my enlistment. I have been left behind in the island of Tekong while the parents took the fast-craft back to mainland, so fast that I couldn't even get to wave them goodbye. This is puzzling, because on subsequent trips when we get to book out, the craft seems to be taking ages to travel us back. And its speed amazingly returns on Sunday book-in nights. &#$%#$&*6%!

Anyway, on the first day itself, I learnt that I had been posted to a welfare company called S for Scorpion. Welfare because recruits there are placed under the care of Warrant Officers who are known to possess fatherly TLC. And later on I had my head shaven as well for two bucks.

The whole 10 weeks of basic millitary training is a mixture of fun, excitement, and tireness. Nothing but training everyday, like foot-drills, chin-up regimes, IPPT, SOC (Standard Obstacle Course), live-firing, grenade-throwing, field camps, and route marches. Recalling one time during a grenade-throwing practice in the field, I was scolded by my platoon commander just because I shouted "Neh-neh!" instead of "Grenade!" when throwing off a dummy grenade. -.-"

Tough it may be, what exactly make us forget all these hardship in camp is - the company of fellow close buddies. Knowing that you guys are in this suffering shit together, and if they can make it, so can you. And also, definitely - admin free time at night!

June 4, 2004 - the big day that me and my buddies have waited and endured for 10 weeks has arrived. It's - "POP* loh!"

Don't know how many pieces of paper and amount of printer ink I have used just to keep printing and printing and printing all that numerous drafts that need to be brought to class for discussion.

Talk about saving the Earth and all that plans to be green.

I'm pretty happy today.

Not just because the "seems-to-take-forever-to-complete" exam is over, but also, it is a fruitful day for me with the number of things that I've done.

Firstly, I caught Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix at GV Vivo. The place that I've always wanted to watch a movie at but always never, either because they did not have good show timings or it was too far for me to travel down.

Well anyway, I think the latest instalment of Harry Potter was okay, despite some negative comments I heard about the show. Yeah, maybe the fighting scene between Harry Potter and the Dark Lord at the end did ended a bit abruptly (I was expecting more exciting stuff), otherwise, the show did kept me watching all the way to the end without feeling any less bored.

Secondly, I bought another t-shirt again from Pull & Bear. It would be the third one I've owned from the store. P&B has now become my next favourite place for tees-shopping after Litmus.

Thirdly, I finally get to eat that famous Punggol nasi lemak at Kovan, Serangoon, thanks to Kalyn girl and her bf who took me there. Overall it's not too bad, there is a variety of side dishes. Except perhaps the coconut milk rice lacks a little in fragrance.

Strangely, after exam my appetite seems to turn good and starting to have food-craving. Right now at this hour, while writing all these, I'm still like eating Jack & Jill's potato chips together with a bottle of Sprite by my side. Ya, so unhealthy but I don't care. Lolx...

Oh shit. Looks like I have infected the people in my class with all that "ella, ella, eh, eh, eh..." Now every word they say they start echo-ing the back. =p

Anyway, I just vomited in my shop yesterday. (Saturday that is).

Don't worry, not on the floor but into a plastic bag (unwrapped from a shirt) that I had grabbed in the nick of time. Too late for me to go to the toilet because by the time I closed the door and everything, I'd have left a trail of stinky watery substance behind.

And no I didn't drink. I just suddenly had a terrible headache and was so sick to entertain those customers. Eventually couldn't take it anymore and "BLAH!... "

Merlion-ing all that fried chicken and fries (and I think some of the chicken rice as well in the afternoon) I took for dinner. Urgh.

I think there's one lady customer, who after hearing vomiting sounds coming from behind the counter, left the shop hurriedly.

Feeling a little relaxed now.

Gotta thanks those wonderful friends with their hugs and concern. Hehe...

But still fretting over the many assignments that need to be done for this on-going module (so many writings!), and the uncertainty of the exact date for the exam for the last module we had. I hate this kind of situation when everything is not confirm, and you can't do other things you want to do with a peace in mind. God save MDIS's management!

Another reason for being relaxed is because, this coming week I don't have to work everyday. Initially thought there's exam next Saturday so save some free days for revision, but turns out it got postponed again. Whatever it is, shall make use of the free days to replenish my rest, settling those unsettled matters, and facial session! - which is tomorrow.

Well so my full-timer colleague had left, and now I sort of became the in-charge there. Tidying the shop, checking stock, pushing for sales, and planning work schedule for myself and the other part-timers - that's why I could suka-suka put days for myself to work as and when I like. Wahaha... just kidding =p

Yesterday and today was pretty busy in the shop. I was alone then all those customers came to attack me. Some customers are like so "chek-ar" (Hokkien for inconsiderate ): Try, try, try, never buy... Never buy is ok. Worst is, after trying, they dump all those clothes around. Then when other customers want, cannot find. Really feel like slapping these people.

Another person that I also want to slap is this irritating man who I met on the train home just now. I was standing near the door when this man came in and stood next to me holding the pole. It's not that the train was very packed or what; there was so much empty space behind him but don't why he's like fixed there and kept trying to like stand in so close to me.

It just felt so weird with someone who you don't even know standing so close to you. Then when his bag accidentally bumped into me, he don't even bother to move back an inch. Wouldn't you even find it irritating?

Stoopid man.

Today felt so gloomly, dark and depressed.

I can't really tell you why.

Perhaps too many events have been going on that I didn't have the time to react and feeling so stressed out.

Work load is getting heavier. Not just school, but outside job as well. With the departure of my full-time colleague at Cathay, gonna be like working everyday this week.

On top of that, heaps of assignment and exam revision are still waiting to be cleared. They seems to be taking forever to be completed.

Because of this, I don't have enough time for everything else. I desperately need facials. My face is suffering all that outbreaks from stress and lack of rest.

I'm tired.

I wish I had someone to hug. =(

Well almost couldn't make it to submit the pre-module assignment today. Why? Because my beloved lappie had to go haywire at the last minute and my report is still inside and haven't been printed out. *started panicking*

Thank god I had my good friend and IT-expert, Jim and his another friend, who came down last night and managed to help me resolved the problem. If not for them, I think I'd be burning the midnight oil to re-type the whole report again on my desktop. Many, many, many kudos to the both of them really :)

After this incident, I finally have no choice but to acknowledge myself as a "techno-jinx."

Every electronic devices that I touch, there bound to be problems cropping up. First was my MP3 player, which had a problem with its installation software. Then came my home PC, with a spoilt CD-writer and a damaged cable. And now my laptop with a hard-disk problem.

See if I'm not cursed then I'm what? =p

Botak Jones

I was on a mission today - To try out "Botak Jones" and find out what's so special about their western food.

I've heard so much about this place which serves nice western food (Fish & Chips especially) and how people have to wait for nearly half an hour before their food is out, that I'm determine to try it out for myself. Plus, its outlet at Ang Mo Kio is so nearby my place (walking distance) that I probaby would get laughed at if I tell people that I haven't been there.

And so, after a short 50% fruitful assignment session with the study buddy, Kalyn, at the AMK west garden McDonald's (the next beautiful Mac in Singapore after the one at Queenstown), the both of us went down in searching for Botak Jones.

Located within a coffeeshop in a quiet neighbourhood, we found the stall with the Botak Jones signboard and which also comes with a tagline that reads "Damn Good Food At A Damn Good Price". Just proves clearly it's authentic American food with all that "damn".

I can't say much about being Damn Good Food for I haven't try it yet, but seriously not Damn Good Price when they charge $6 for a Fish & Chips, $4 for a sandwhich and $3.50 for a small piece of apple pie! It's just a little pricey for me I thought.

Anyway so we placed our orders, and I had what else but Fish & Chips, which is one of their popular items in the house (or so the menu says), while it's Italian Sausage for Kalyn.

While waiting for the food to arrive and trying to kill time away, I got curious about the identity of Botak Jones.

Eventually I tried spotting for anyone who is a "botak" and happens to be named "Jones" as well. But there was none, save for some bald ah-peks who were sitting outside the coffeeshop chit-chatting among themselves. I ruled out the possibility that it could be one of them because I was told Botak Jones is an ang-moh.

I gave up spotting and decide to turn to indulging in my Fish & Chips instead which had arrived at the same time. And boy was their serving great I thought. Two reasonable-sized pieces of fish fillet served with a big pile of salad and fries which eventually became my leftovers at the end. I must have had too much fries on the same day after a medium one at Mac earlier on, that I felt like puking them out as a pile of mashed potatoes.

As for Kalyn, she's nowhere better. Worst, she got onions. At the end of it we were totally fulled!... with fries... It's Damn Filling Food!

While the good thing about Botak Jones is that their food variety are pretty special and comes in big servings, but I personally find the taste of their food just being so-so. In fact, I'd rather go for Rasa Sayang western food stall at AMK S-11 food court (another famous stall in AMK) if I have the craving for western food.

Pirates

And I am telling you the three reasons why I have been dying to watch the latest instalment of "Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End": (1) I want to know what happen to "sotong face" Davy Jones's heart. (2) I want to see my favourite Captain Jack Sparrow bringing quirky-back. (3) I want to hear pirate lord Sao Feng, played by Chow Yun Fatt, mentioning, "Welcome to Singapore."

So today I did, and have finally heard Chow saying those three magical words and that kind of leaves me satisfied I guess.

However there are other parts of the movie that I'm not really satisfied of. And one of which is - the movie duration is really too long! I know it's the third instalment but they needn't have to drag it to nearly three hours eh? I'm sitting until my butt is At Split End.

On top of that, the story seems to get a bit more confusing and complicating this time. Too many events have been going on in the show such that I couldn't make out which was which, what was what, where was where, who was who, and blah, blah, blah.

Nevertheless, the show still has its fair share of entertaining factor. Just like how Sao Feng who keep asking for more steam for god-knows-reason. And the two female servants by his side who look like they had just made a sweet escape from Gwen Stefanie.

In this case, I should have just save up the seven bucks and ask to borrow a pirated DVD of the "Pirates" from the "Pirate of DVD" in my class (i.e. Leonard) and watch it at the comfort of my home. =p
